This is listed in Logan & Best's "Cast Iron Toy Guns And Capshooters" 1990, Page 90 as M2.1, "MAGAZINE", Date: 1892, Maker: STEVENS, Length: 7", Type: Multi-Shot, Double Action, PEA, Derringer Style. Other marking: PATENTED APRIL 26 1892.; MADE IN U.S.A.. This has a "Three Star", (***) rarity out of five. Apparently, to use this 1892 STEVENS "MAGAZINE" Cast Iron PEASHOOTER, Gun, Pistol you load a number of peas (the ammunition) into the upper "magazine", which are held in the ready by the visible spring. Pulling back on the loop or ring-holed trigger engages an internal works or mechanism which is spring loaded, a pea drops down, and reaching a point disengages, propelling the projectile with force out the barrel...and repeat. This 112-year-old toy belongs in your cap gun collection. (The only experience with peashooters, as a kid growing up was we bicycled to a little store in the next town. The owner kept hidden under the counter for sale special long straws and little cellophane bags of white peas. After our "contraband" purchase we cycled back towards home and would load several of them in our mouths at once and use our breath and tongue coordination to shoot them out the tube at each other, store windows, street signs, etc. They must have been banned because if the police in our town saw us shooting peas with them they would confiscate them! Smile!)
